Coatings - How It Works
The most important advantage of metal coatings is to extend tool’s life. During grinding applications, some of diamonds lost before they wear out. But coatings could reduce the probability of loss of diamond particles.
On one hand, coatings improve heat dissipation. During grinding process, the heat generated from the work piece will be transmitted to the diamond grits at first. Because diamond is of very good heat transmission property, it will transmit immediately the heat to resin surrounds it. Thus the resin became soft, which resulted in loss of diamond particles from the bond. But the metal coatings could retard the heat transmission and keep the hardness of the bond.
On the other hand, coatings could improve bond retention. After coated with metal, the size of diamond particle increased. So the bond could hold the diamond particles well. Meanwhile, the rough surface of coatings could also improve bond retention.
